'This analysis looks at the declared profession, educational qualifications and a number of other background parameters when our members fill in their application and join,' said a spokeswoman for IllicitEncounters.com.

'There is most definitely a trend towards the upper demographics so far as our membership is concerned, and that is probably highly representative of the sorts of people who are resorting to developing a long-term affair as opposed to one-night stands.

'If we look at our membership and take some mean averages of income, career and education, we can see that there are specific profiles of people who are looking for the opportunity to develop an affair.'

The most likely types of people to have an affair are:
1. A 38-year-old successful male business owner or director earning more than £150,000. Likely to be a graduate.
2. A 36-year-old female doctor or senior healthcare professional.
3. A 39-year-old female director-level executive involved in sales and marketing in a medium-to-large business. Graduate.
4. A 36-year-old male senior manager in banking or financial services. Graduate.
5. A 31-year-old male sales professional or consultant in a medium-to-large business.
6. A 41-year-old self-employed female involved in upmarket interior design.
7. A 37-year-old female lawyer.
8. A 33-year-old female accountant.
9. A 42-year-old male property developer.
10. A 42-year-old male lawyer.

'Our membership is now more than 160,000 people. The feedback we’re getting from many of the new members is that they would much rather find romance and fulfillment in an affair or a secret ‘other life’ than go through the agony of a divorce and create so many victims in the process,' said the spokeswoman for IllicitEncounters.com.
